Business Internet Web Presence - Business Internet Web Hosting

Now that you've got your domain name, you need to start thinking about what you're going to do with it!

There are two main ways in which your domain name can be used:

  1. As an Internet web presence in the form of a company web site
  2. As a business communication tool in the form of an email address

There are now two ways to accomplish these tasks:

  1. You can either run your own web site and email system from the comfort of your own premises by buying the relevant hardware and software to do so
  2. Or, you can pay a Web Hosting company to do this for you

Here, we will go with the second option and discuss Web Hosting. If you already have some servers, an established email system and a good Internet connection, you may want to go the first route and do it all yourself. We will try and cover that choice elsewhere.

Web Hosting

Web HostingThere are a number of companies that offer a Web Hosting service and there are a number of different packages that they will offer. Below, we will go through a few examples but ultimately, it will be down to you to go for the package that best suits your budget and requirements.

Single Page

  • As the name suggests, this is the most basic form of web hosting and consists of a single web page. This package will be free with a lot of Internet Domain Name Registrars/Web Hosting companies when you purchase a domain name. If you have bought a domain name predominantly for a branded email solution or just want a page with your company name, contact details,a description of your business services, a location map etc., then this is the cheapest option.

Simple/Beginner Hosting

  • The next step up the hosting ladder. These types of package will give you more space for your web site, enabling you to create a multi-page and more complex site. Often, email can be handled within this level of hosting. Because at this level it is expected that you will have a more complex and multi-paged web site, you are now given 'traffic limits' as part of the package.

Home/SMB Hosting

  • The lowest level of hosting aimed more squarely at business web sites. All the limits are increased, i.e. web space, traffic limits, email accounts, subdomains etc. and there are now usually more business orientated tools and services such as databases, scripting tools etc.

Business/Professional Hosting

  • These packages follow on from the previous and there will probably be several variations of package each hosting more or less space, traffic, services etc. If you're looking at running an e-commerce site, then you will be looking at this level of hosting and the package you choose will be the one that best suits how your web site will operate, i.e. Windows or Linux, MySQL or SQL Server for databases and number of databases etc.

There is a natural progression past these web hosting packages in to the realm of the Dedicated or Virtual Dedicated Server. These are much more expensive platforms but ineffect, give you total control over your web server, meaning it's like having your own server but instead of it being on your premises, it's at the hosting company's datacenter where the Internet connection will be better and regular backups will be performed automatically. These options will be covered elsewhere.
